EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
